Day 8
Mr. McCarthy and Mr. Bailey didn't wake up until 7:45 a.m. When they came out of their tent, they discovered everyone else had already gone fishing. John and Kelsey were in one canoe and Mr. Vogeli and Glen were in another, fishing for bass. Mr. Bailey put on the coffee and killed some time with Mr. Jack. Kelsey and John came in first, having caught the limit of 4 fish. Glen & Mr. Vogeli didn't come back in until 10 a.m. Unfortunately, they only had one bass to show for their efforts.
Kelsey and Mr. Vogeli fillet all of the fish. Kelsey had also taken John out picking wild blueberries, so we had all the makings of a terrific breakfast.
We made the pancake mix with the fresh blueberries, cooked the fish, and prepared hash browns and sausage. Everything tasted terrific! It was quite
a feast.
It was 12:15 p.m. now and time to take our day trip. We had decided to see Basswood Falls which was only 5½ miles north and west from our campsite. Everyone was coming on this excursion even though Mr. Jack had expressed an interest in spending the day in Kelsey's hammock.
Because we were leaving our campsite all set up, we weren't carrying any gear with us except John's daybag with our lunch, sunscreen and other first aid items. Consequently, we were riding higher and lighter in the water than we were used to.
Adam, pictured here, was in the stern with Mr. Bailey up front. John traveled with Kelsey, and Mr. McCarthy was the duffer, once again with Mr. Vogeli and Glen.
It was another beautiful sunny afternoon with nothing but blue skies. It took us about two hours to reach Basswood Falls. Kelsey had warned us about staying close to the shoreline as we approached the Falls. There had been a family some years ago that got swept through the rapids area and were drowned.
We came up to the portage trail where we were going to just pull our canoes out of the river. There was another group finishing their portage and entering the lake. The proper etiquette is to allow a group entering from a portage to leave the area first before the group getting out of their canoes to start on the portage trail.
The "Falls" were more like long, wide rapids; but, obviously very treacherous. On seeing this area, Mr. McCarthy quickly commented that he could pee faster than this! We spent nearly an hour exploring this area and taking pictures before heading back to the canoes to enjoy our late lunch.
We left Basswood Falls and made the return trip back to our campsite. Tonight's dinner was spaghetti with meat sauce.
After dinner, Glen went fishing once again in the shallow area and he caught a huge Northern Pike, who did not appreciate being held for a picture. It wiggled out of Glen's hand and bit him on his thumb before hitting the ground. We finally got to use the first aid kit!
The pike was later returned to the water, still alive.
It had been another terrific day! We closed with playing some cards, and working on some rhymes for our "Rendezvous" skit that we were expected to do in basecamp tomorrow night, as this would be our last campsite in the wilderness. Kelsey took the lead in setting down our journey in prose, which we would have to act out in front of everyone. We helped her by coming up with some funny rhymes of our own!
Despite her earlier objections about Mr. Bailey's Crazy Creek Canoe Chair getting in the way during portages, Kelsey was now appreciating how comfortable it was to have the chair in camp.
We agreed to get up at 7:00 a.m. and get on the water as soon as possible. Kelsey recalled some additional experiences with being windbound on Basswood Lake; however, it was shaping up to be another calm evening and the water was still.
On to our final day on the water, Day 9...
